What each edition covers

Numbering: Japanese volume numbers, as the distributor's Collector's Edition records state them. It describes mapped story units only; separately documented extras remain separate. Each Collector's Edition book holds two Japanese volumes. Book 5 also holds a story that the distributor's record calls never-before-published; it is listed as an extra, not as a numbered volume.

Mapped coverage

1–10 · 10 mapped story units across 5 documented editions. This is the range in this map, not a claim that the series is complete.

Calculate overlap and new coverage

Select the numbered units and editions you already own, then choose candidate editions to compare. The result uses only this series' numbering system.

Own none yet? Leave the owned choices empty. Set a target to see gaps; a shelf that already covers it needs no story purchase. Save your shelf on this device to resume here, or create a share link to carry the selection to another browser.

Buying a complete set as a gift? The manga box set gift guide lists documented complete sets and how to avoid duplicating a shelf.

Mushishi Collector’s Edition book numbers are not Japanese volume numbers. Book 3 holds Japanese volumes 5–6, and book 5 holds 9–10. Match the volume range in the table, not the book number, against what you own.

What the distributor says is new

The distributor’s descriptions call the line a “hardcover omnibus edition featuring a completely original translation and new cover designs,” with “an all-new translation and lettering, and beautiful color pages and cover illustrations never seen in the U.S. before.” They add that English copies of the series had been “out of print for 15 years.” This page does not map those earlier English printings, because their numbering was not checked.

Book 5 and the new story

Book 5’s record reads “Includes Japanese volumes 9-10 and never-before-published story, “The Shadow That Swallows the Sun.”” The story is listed as an extra, not as a numbered volume, so it does not change which Japanese volumes the book covers. Books 4 and 5 are scheduled releases, and a publisher’s date can move.

Worked examples

  • You own books 1 to 3. You hold Japanese volumes 1–6, and the next book is book 4 (volumes 7–8), scheduled for December 15, 2026.
  • You own only book 2. You hold volumes 3–4 and still lack 1–2 and everything after 4.
  • You want the last volumes in this line. That is book 5, volumes 9–10, which also carries the new story.

Use the calculator below to mark the volumes you own and see which books repeat them. For the general method, read the box-set duplicate check, and check each ISBN-13 against a listing with the ISBN edition check.
