Sailor Moon Editions: Why the Volume Counts Differ
Separate Sailor Moon's 12-volume edition, 10-volume editions, Sailor V and bundle variants before deciding what your collection is missing.
Count numbered Sailor Moon books within one named edition—not every product in a retailer or publisher category. Different editions divide the story differently, and a category can also contain bundles and the separate Codename: Sailor V series.

Kodansha’s 2011 announcement explains the twelve-book main storyline and separate short-story books; its original series listing lists twelve volumes. The publisher identifies Eternal Edition 10 as the final volume. For the Naoko Takeuchi Collection, we checked the individual product names rather than using the page’s total blindly.
Why a page can say “13 volumes” without thirteen main books
At this check, the Naoko Takeuchi Collection page displayed thirteen available entries. Those entries included Sailor Moon 1–10, a volume-1 bundle with a figure, and Codename: Sailor V 1–2. Treating all thirteen as consecutive main-series volumes would create three imaginary gaps for someone who owns Sailor Moon 1–10.
Use this audit sequence on any large catalog:
- Group products by the complete series title.
- Within that group, separate the edition labels.
- Collapse a book-plus-gift bundle and the same numbered standalone book when counting story ownership.
- Count the remaining distinct spine numbers.
A gift can make one product different to buy without making it different numbered story coverage. The publisher’s series-status field is also not a substitute for checking whether the exact volume you want is released or orderable.
Can you mix the 12-book and 10-book editions?
Do not assume original volume 8 equals Eternal volume 8. A ratio such as twelve divided by ten describes only the total book counts. It cannot identify the first unread chapter in a particular book.
If you are switching mid-series, compare contents pages or a publisher-confirmed chapter range. Keep your notes in chapter units for that handover. This guide does not provide an unverified conversion table or claim identical placement of short stories and extras across editions.
Kodansha describes the Naoko Takeuchi Collection as using the Eternal Edition’s updated translation in a more portable format. That is a publisher description, not our independent translation or paper-quality assessment. For a new collection, compare a complete sequence in the format you prefer. For a complete existing collection, a different edition is a deliberate rebuy rather than evidence of missing main volumes.
