Monster Perfect Edition: A Complete-Set Buying Checklist
Audit a nine-volume Monster Perfect Edition collection, distinguish missing books from repeated numbers, and compare a partial lot with a complete order.
A complete English Monster: The Perfect Edition sequence contains numbered books 1–9. VIZ’s Monster catalog lists those nine editions and marks 9 as the final volume. When buying a used lot, verify that exact sequence in the actual books rather than accepting “nine books” as proof of completeness.
Check the edition before the numbers
The full phrase The Perfect Edition matters. A listing titled only “Monster volume 5” does not by itself establish which edition or language is selected. VIZ’s Perfect Edition 5 record identifies ISBN 9781421569109; its Perfect Edition 9 record identifies ISBN 9781421569147. Use those only for those exact books, not as a pattern for constructing the other ISBNs.
Ask for a legible photograph of the actual spines laid out in sequence. If a volume’s identity is unclear, request its title or copyright page. A photograph copied from the publisher can illustrate an edition but cannot establish what this particular seller will ship.
A missing-number audit you can reproduce

These are hypothetical inventory examples, not listings we found for sale. The calculation removes repeated numbers before comparing the lot against the documented nine-book sequence. It does not infer the corresponding volumes or chapters of another edition.
Price the repair before buying the lot
A partial collection has two costs: the price of the lot and the delivered cost of filling its missing positions. Check both before deciding that it beats a complete order. Do not assume an absent volume can be found at the same price as the available ones; search the exact edition and ISBN of each missing book.
For a lot missing 5, compare lot cost + cost of Perfect Edition 5 with the delivered cost of a complete 1–9 set in acceptable condition. If you already own Perfect Edition 5, that same partial lot may fit your shelf much better. Ownership changes the decision without changing the seller’s contents.
Read the listing’s condition description separately from the completeness check. Nine correct numbers cannot prove that pages are intact, and a damaged book is not repaired by the presence of a matching spine. Request clarification about any condition issue that would affect your willingness to buy.
