Hellsing Deluxe Editions: Why Volume 8 Appears Twice
Compare Dark Horse's three English Hellsing Deluxe books by their published chapter boundaries before mixing them with paperbacks.
Hellsing Deluxe 2 and 3 both mention original volume 8 because the collected story crosses that paperback boundary. They are consecutive books, not two alternative ways to buy the same ending. The distributor lists Deluxe 2 as chapters 28–62 and Deluxe 3 as chapters 63–88. A collector who owns Deluxe 1 and 2 still needs Deluxe 3 to finish the story in that edition line.
The trap is reading “volumes 5–8” as four entire paperbacks, then treating the “8–10” description of the next hardcover as a duplicate. Use the chapter boundary alongside the volume label. It is especially useful when replacing only part of a paperback collection.
This is a research-based comparison of Dark Horse’s English editions using publisher and authorized-distributor records checked on 1 October 2026. We have not inspected physical copies. Catalog chapter numbers below retain the distributor’s wording; they are not an independently checked table of contents or a claim about every numbering convention.
The three publisher records, side by side
| English hardcover | Chapter range listed by the distributor | Original-volume description | Checked ISBN-13 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deluxe 1 | 1–27 | Material from volumes 1–4 | 9781506715537 |
| Deluxe 2 | 28–62 | Material from volumes 5–8 | 9781506720012 |
| Deluxe 3 | 63–88 | Material from volumes 8–10, plus extras from 1–10 | 9781506720029 |
Sources: the authorized distributor’s individual records for Deluxe 1, Deluxe 2 and Deluxe 3. Dark Horse’s own multi-volume listing also gives the overlapping volume labels and identifies a three-book collection. These are factual sources, not shopping recommendations.
Read each row as the contents statement for one exact publication. In the distributor’s numbering, 62 is followed by 63: the listed chapter ranges meet without overlapping. Repeating the label “volume 8” does not prove that the same numbered chapters are printed twice.
Nor does this table establish how many pages of paperback 8 sit in each hardcover. We do not convert that partial boundary into a whole-volume ownership tick or invent a percentage. If you need page-level equivalence between particular printings, the books’ actual contents pages are the next evidence required.
Choose the missing book, not another full set
Start by writing the edition line as well as the spine number. “Hellsing 2” could mean a paperback or Deluxe 2, with very different coverage. The following decisions concern the English Dark Horse books above.
| What is on your shelf? | Practical next decision | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| None of the three Deluxes | Deluxe 1 starts the sequence; 2 and 3 continue it | Starting with Deluxe 2 because you think it means original volume 2 |
| Deluxe 1 and 2 | Deluxe 3 supplies the remaining published chapter range | Skipping 3 because both descriptions mention original volume 8 |
| Deluxe 1 and 3 | Deluxe 2 fills the intervening chapter range | Calling the shelf complete just because it includes the final book |
| All three Deluxes | No additional Deluxe purchase is needed for this sequence | Buying a retailer’s three-book bundle to add story coverage |
| Original paperbacks 1–8 | Deluxe 3 is a possible finishing route, but includes material from 8 already owned | Counting all of Deluxe 3 as new or assuming it contains only 9–10 |
| Original paperbacks 1–10 | A Deluxe purchase is a format or extras choice | Treating a format upgrade as missing numbered story coverage |
For the mixed paperback shelf, compare the cost of completing the paperback line with the cost of the desired hardcover, including delivery. There is no universal cheapest choice here. A lower bundle price is irrelevant if it mostly buys books you already own. Our duplicate-check worksheet explains the same set logic, but a split volume needs a smaller unit than a whole-book tick.

| Edition | When its buying link is useful |
|---|---|
| Deluxe 1 | You need the opening hardcover, not a second copy. View Deluxe 1 on Amazon US |
| Deluxe 2 | Your Deluxe shelf lacks the middle book. View Deluxe 2 on Amazon US |
| Deluxe 3 | You need the ending hardcover or have deliberately accepted the partial paperback overlap. View Deluxe 3 on Amazon US |
These are individual English hardcovers, not a promise that a neighboring format tab, translated edition or seller-created bundle has the same identity. Use the ISBN identity check before accepting an alternative listing. The Amazon identifiers came from verified retailer listings, not from converting ISBN digits into product links.
Keep extras and completion separate
The Deluxe 3 distributor record mentions extras from original volumes 1–10 without itemizing them in that description. We therefore leave the exact bonus inventory unspecified. That phrase alone cannot settle whether a particular side story, prequel or illustration is included.
Likewise, owning the three main Deluxes does not certify ownership of every related Hellsing publication. A complete collection needs a defined scope. If the target is this three-book edition line and all three are present, stop buying for coverage. A different format, translation preference or bonus-content goal needs its own evidence and budget.
