Guidebooks, Art Books and Manga Box-Set Volume Counts

A box can contain more books than numbered story volumes. Count the main-story volumes first, then list guidebooks, art books and novels separately. Otherwise an extra can appear to fill a gap it does not actually fill.

Four cases where a simple book count misleads

Death Note is an especially useful warning: a companion book can have a number in its title. Our Death Note map does not interpret “13: How to Read” as a thirteenth volume of the main story. Likewise, the guidebook in Berserk Deluxe 14 does not become regular volume 42.

Separate two honest questions

“Will this add a missing story volume?” is answered by the coverage calculation. “Do I want the extra?” is a different personal decision. When a reader owns all six Akira story volumes, the anniversary box has no new numbered coverage in this map, but its listed art book remains visible. Hiding the extra would be as misleading as adding it to the story total.

Unknown does not mean absent

Some catalog records do not yet have a fully checked list of bonus material. They say that extras are unverified. That does not mean the edition contains no extras, and it should not be used to rank two sets against each other. The methodology explains this boundary.

These maps compare documented volume membership. They do not establish that every page, translation, bonus illustration or printing change is identical across editions. For those questions, a publisher’s edition-specific detail is needed; counting spines alone cannot settle them.
