Fullmetal Alchemist: 27 Singles, 18 Hardcovers or 9 Omnibuses
Understand Fullmetal Alchemist's three English print numbering systems and choose a collection route without treating hardcover numbers as singles.
Fullmetal Alchemist’s original paperbacks, Fullmetal Edition hardcovers and 3-in-1 editions use different spine numbers. A lower final number does not mean the story stops early. The practical problem is choosing one sequence—or checking the chapter boundary carefully when changing between them.

VIZ lists 27 original volumes, 18 Fullmetal Editions and nine 3-in-1 books. The Fullmetal Edition 18 page explicitly identifies the conclusion. The original box set contains singles 1–27, plus a novel and poster.
Why multiplying the hardcover number can mislead
Dividing 27 original books by 18 hardcovers gives an average of 1.5. That arithmetic does not establish where any particular hardcover begins or ends. Story chapters need not stop at a convenient halfway point in a paperback, and an average cannot prove chapter membership.
For example, someone owning Fullmetal Editions 1–6 should record exactly that—not mark original singles 1–9 as verified ownership merely because 6 × 1.5 = 9. Before adding original volume 10, compare actual contents pages or publisher-confirmed chapter boundaries. This guide deliberately does not offer a speculative conversion chart.

Staying within one sequence makes a missing-book audit simple: list the spine numbers you own and find the gaps. Mixed-format buying adds a chapter-matching job. It can still make sense, but a cheap isolated volume is not automatically the next part you need.
The novel in the original box is not original story volume 28. Treat its value separately if you already own the complete manga. The original box-set map checks that bounded paperback collection; it does not currently convert the hardcovers or omnibuses.
Check the actual purchase option
Use the full format name, language and ISBN together. A search for “Fullmetal Alchemist volume 9” can point to three very different positions in a collection. Compare the selected edition’s record rather than trusting a shared product thumbnail.
