How to Check a Manga Box Set for Duplicate Volumes

Compare the box’s documented contents against the exact volumes you own, then inspect both overlap and remaining gaps. The useful answer is not simply how many books are in the box: it is which missing volumes it would add to your chosen target.

A worksheet you can use without an account

Write three lists: owned volumes, candidate contents and the range you want to cover. Keep every list within the same series and numbering system. Then calculate:

• Overlap: volumes in both your owned list and the candidate.
• New coverage: candidate volumes absent from your owned list.
• Missing within target: target volumes absent from the combined lists.

For example, VIZ’s Naruto Box Set 2 contains 28–48. If you own 1–30 and want coverage through 48, the overlap is 28–30, new coverage is 31–48, and no target volumes remain missing. The set adds eighteen numbered volumes while repeating three.

Use exact holdings, not just the highest number

Owning volumes 1–5 and 8 is different from owning everything through 8. Kodansha’s Noragami Omnibus 2 contains 4–6. Against that sparse shelf it repeats 4–5 and adds 6, while 7 remains missing if your target is 8. A shortcut based on your highest numbered book would conceal the gap.

A fully covered target is a valid stopping point

The A Silent Voice original box set contains story volumes 1–7. If you already own all seven, it supplies no new numbered story coverage. Its separately listed extras or presentation might still interest you, but the coverage result should not manufacture a missing-book recommendation.
